Cox’s Bazar is the biggest sea beach and most attractive tourist spot in Bangladesh. It is visited by a large number of tourists from Britain, America, Korea, Japan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and many other countries each year. Though the Bangladesh Porjatan Corporation (BPC) doesn’t keep any record on how many people visit the beach annually, we can find an AFP report that says that during the winter season, there can be more than 10,000 available rooms in the beach area near the beach range from expensive high-end resorts to more reasonable options. Moreover many private hotels, BPC Motels, and two “Five-star” hotels are located on or near the beach.

Location of Cox’s Bazar

Cox’s Bazar is a fishing port, a town,  and district headquarters in Bangladesh. Naturally, it is well-known for its longest sandy beach which is the world’s longest natural sandy sea beach. It is a 125 km continuous sandy sea beach with a gentle slope. It is situated 150 km south of Chittagong. Dhaka and Cox’s Bazar distance is 298 kilometers (185 miles). The driving distance between Dhaka and Cox’s Bazar is 393 kilometers (244 miles).  Flying distance from Dhaka to Cox’s Bazar is 298 kilometers (185 miles). Cox’s Bazar was once known by the name “Panowa”, the literal translation of which means “yellow flower”. Another familiar name was “Palongkee”.

History of Cox’s Bazar

The new Cox’s Bazar named from Captain Hiram Cox who died in 1799. At the end of the18th century, Captain Hiram Cox an officer of British East India Company was appointed as the Superintendent of Palongkee outpost after Warren Hastings became the Governor of Bengal. He particularly appointed to deal with a century-long conflict between Arakan refugees and local Rakhains. The Captain was a having tender feelings soul and the plight of the people touched his heart. He launched upon the huge task of rehabilitating refugees in the area and made significant progress. An untimely death took Captain Cox in 1799 before he could finish his work. He went out but his noble work had done earned him a place in the hearts of the locals and to honor his role in rehabilitation work a market was set and named after him as Cox’s Bazaar (“Cox’s Market”). Now, Cox’s Bazar is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Bangladesh, and become a major international tourist destination.

Adinath Temple

The Temple is located at the top of the hill of Minak, 1.5 meters above sea level. Adinath Temple is situated at Thakurtala village of the independent Gorakhghata Union under Maheshkhali Upazila of Cox’s Bazar district of Bangladesh. It is basically the temple of Mahadev. Here a farmer found a statue of Mahesh (another name for the Hindu mythological god Mahadev) in a forest on the island. Then he built a temple in the name of this deity and placed the temple there. After then the name Khali (in the carnal sense) is added with the name of this deity – this place is known as Maheshkhali.


Dulahazara Safari Park is located 6 km north of Cox’s Bazar District and 5 km south of Chakra Police Station, on the Dulhazara block of the Fasiakhali Range of the South Forest Division. Mainly, it is a deer breeding center, the park was established by the Ministry of Forest and Environment in year 4. Saint Martin’s Island

St. Martin’s Island is a coral reef located northeast of the Bay of Bengal in the south of Bangladesh. Saint Martin’s Island is a small island that’s an area only 36 km2. Saint Martin is located in the northeastern part of the Bay of Bengal, about 9 km south of the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf peninsula, and assemble the southernmost part of Bangladesh. There is a small adjoining island that is known as Chera Dwip. This island is about 8 kilometers (5 miles) west of the northwest coast of Myanmar, at the mouth of the Naf River. Many years ago, under adverse weather, a cinnamon-bearing Arabian vessel broke down with a huge underwater stone, causing the ship’s cinnamon to spread all over the island and later became St. Martin’s Island.
